Fox mulling second year of 'Terra Nova'

Jason OMara stars in Fox drama Terra Nova, which wrapped its first season Monday and awaits word on a possible soph season. The end of the first season of "Terra Nova" leaves a cliffhanger that has nothing to do with the plot: Will Fox renew the drama series?"Nova" ended its run Monday in typically solid but unspectacular fashion, averaging a 2.2 rating/6 share in adults and 7.2 million viewers overall. That put it above ABC and NBC but slightly below its season average (2.6 demo rating and 7.8 million). Those are respectable numbers but not necessarily good enough given the expensive production costs behind the dino spectacle and the pedigree of executive producers Steven Spielberg and Peter Chernin. 20th Century Fox Television is the studio behind the 13-episode run, which was never intended to earn a back-nine order. One indication of "Terra Nova" landing another 13 episodes is whether Fox will pick up the options on the skein's lead actors. But even if that happens before year's end, it doesn't so much guarantee a renewal as it does buy Fox more time to make a decision that may be made as late as the end of January, which is more or less the deadline to get the elaborate production back in operation.Ratings are far from the only factor in Fox's decision on "Nova." In addition to syndication sales in overseas markets and DVD or digital revenues, the network will also take into account that "Nova" boasts one of the bigger percentage increases among dramas in "live-plus-seven" DVR data -- from a 2.6 to a 3.7 in 18-49.This isn't the only drama whose fate will be mulled by Fox execs over the holidays, as a decision is expected soon on a possible ninth season for Universal Television's "House."Related: Ratings: Modest finish for 'Terra Nova' Contact Andrew Wallenstein at andrew.wallenstein@variety.com

Red Bull charges into theaters

While Red Bull Medias production company, Terra Mater Factual Studios, tends to focus on nonfiction TV, The Lazarus Protocol, which stars Peter Fonda, is a feature thriller. On the surface, a film described as a political thriller about 9/11 seems like a strange production choice for a company that presents itself as a supplier of nature, science and history programming. But there's a hybrid method to the narrative madness behind Vienna's Terra Mater Factual Studios, which has just wrapped principal photography on its first theatrical feature, "The Lazarus Protocol." The pic stars Peter Fonda, Travis Fimmel ("The Experiment") and Michael Desante ("The Hurt Locker").Terra Mater, a wholly owned subsidiary of Red Bull Media House, has a slate for the coming five years that focuses on 100 hours of factual programming for its dedicated weekly slot on Austria's Servus TV channel -- also owned by Red Bull. Also in the pipeline: 10 theatrical films on factual themes. While theatrical plans include docs such as "Mind Over Matter," a film following five Paralympic athletes, company chief Walter Kohler, former head of Austria TV network ORF's nature strand, Universum, is primarily interested in films that combine fact and fiction."The goal is to achieve a hybrid of the two genres where you don't perceive the border between them," he explains, citing two films prepping for production, "Cry of the Eagle" and "Lighthouse of the Orcas" where crews will spend up to a year in the wild shooting material that then becomes the basis for a dramatic story with actors. It's the hybrid element that drew Terra Mater to "Lazarus." Production partner Thomas Feldkircher, who brought the script to Kohler, calls the film a "factual thriller." Inspired by the events of 9/11, the film weaves news footage of the terrorist attack and its aftermath into a story of a Navy Seal intelligence agent, Lazarus Fell (Fimmel) who fakes his own death and drops off the grid to pursue a 10-year manhunt for an unnamed terrorist (Desante) responsible for 9/11.It all plays out as a three-man Kammerspiel -- or portrait of lower-middle-class life -- shot in 21 days in a disused ironworks outside of Vienna, which substitutes for an abandoned Nazi-era railway station Lazarus uses as his base of operations. The use of archival news material -- making up approximately one-third of the film -- functions not as illustration, but, as Kohler says, "a protagonist" in the story."When you see films that deal with social issues or political issues, they're couched in layers of fiction and metaphor," says writer-director Paul Finelli, "but we're using evidence from the real world, actual news reports, presidents' speeches, all the stuff that you know because you saw it on TV, and we're re-imagining the context."Kohler says he knew the film would be difficult to finance in the U.S. and the financing came from Terra Mater, Tomcat Prods. (Thomas Feldkirche) and some Austrian state subsidy money. Terra Mater would not be drawn on a budget, and they do their own international sales.Originally conceived as part of a theme evening for Servus TV for the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Terra Mater execs ultimately decided the project would be better served as a feature film."Doing a thriller is a departure for us," says Sophokles Tasioulis, head of cinema and international sales at Terra Mater. "We are still focused on nature, but if we come across something driven by a strong element of reality, (that's) unusual, we will consider it. We are in a position to take a risk. That speeds up projects; you don't have to wait for decisions. n Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

John Huston: Courage and Art: The Review

This short article first made an appearance within the November. 18 problem from the Hollywood Reporter magazine.our editor recommendsTHR's 5 Books each week: Stephen King, F1, Rock History, and Umberto EcoAnjelica Huston Penning Memoir Due in 2013 Jeffrey Meyers has hardly any new to say of the 40 films John Huston made, but he is doing have a great deal to increase the record concerning the a lot of women who swam with the late director's existence. Huston would be a rake of the elevated order so wide a swath did the charming, charming, difficult, passionate, intellectual and sadistic swashbuckler cut that the more fitting title with this particular biography may have been The Sultan of St. Clerans, a mention of the the Irish manor house which was the determining Hustonian domain. Much continues to be discussed him through the years but, for individuals still intrigued about who did things to whom in Hollywood's heyday, Meyers is not shy about doing a bit of detailed record-keeping. The writer of 23 previous biographies, including a high quality one about Ernest Hemingway, Meyers starts having a detailed but excessively emphatic prologue that stresses the parallels between Hemingway and Huston. Yes, these were both macho artists having a bloodstream lust for large game and multiple spouses. Additionally they understood and, apparently, loved each another. But Hemingway created an indelible original oeuvre while Huston made next to nothing but adaptations of existing literary works. And, almost paradoxically, Hemingway experienced from the sorts of doubts and various insecurities which were absolutely foreign to Huston, who moved so easily in one lady and film project to another. The very best account of Huston's eventful existence is found in Lawrence Grobel's 1989 volume The Hustons. Meyers essentially rehashes existing details about John's unconventional upbringing because the boy from the mostly absent actor Walter and peripatetic journalist Rhea, in addition to his early aimlessness, personal obstreperousness and struggles like a painter in Paris, actor and burgeoning film writer. Enough books have previously recorded Huston's important films, in the Maltese Falcon, The Treasure from the Sierra Madre and also the African Full to Underneath the Volcano, Prizzi's Recognition and also the Dead. What exactly's new here? Plenty of gossip about Huston's extensive amorous activities in the many horses' mouths. Just like many males who understood him were jealous of Huston's way with females (he and Errol Flynn once involved in an extended fistfight over Olivia p Havilland Huston lost), most males would want to be appreciated by their women as positively as Huston is as simple as his. Candidly explaining his subject as "a compulsive satyr," Meyers reviews that many of Huston's paramours "gave his performance rave reviews." His fifth wife, Celeste (Cici) Shane, whom he nastily referred to like a "crocodile" in the memoirs, testifies that, despite the fact that he was 66 once they married in 1972, "he was the very best of my whole existence. Honest to God, John was an amazing lover." He obviously felt exactly the same way about her. You could construct several groups for that women in Huston's existence. There have been the fast conquests as Celeste states, "John would screw something that wasn't nailed lower." A few of these were stars, including Zita Johann, Mary Astor, Ava Gardner and Eiko Ando. Younger crowd had five spouses: first sweetheart Dorothy Harvey, aristocratic Irish beauty Lesley Black, actress Evelyn Keyes and model/ballerina Ricki Soma (Anjelica's mother) and so the wealthy, self-possessed Celeste. He was faithful to not one of them and usually fed up with them before long, which runs unlike his pattern using the ladies who constitute another category, the lengthy-standing mistresses. With p Havilland, the refined and complicated Marietta FitzGerald Tree, French actress Suzanne Flon and Zoe Sallis, mom of his boy Danny, to title four of the most basic of his lengthy-term enthusiasts, Huston carried out matters that ongoing, off and on, across a long time and partnerships. He sired three children. Lighting this formerly untouched but clearly central facet of Huston's existence helps Meyers complete a larger portrait from the guy than has formerly been offered he clearly conveys his subject's allure, cruelty, intellectual thirst, game-playing, peculiar emotional intensity and distance, callousness and egoism. Meyers doesn't bring it up, however i always loved Orson Welles' remark towards the effect that uncle excelled at playing Mephistopheles to their own Faust. He was, unquestionably, an intricate figure, and Meyers catches that although also writing with apparent haste. Related Subjects Anjelica Huston John Huston

Cheers & Jeers: Top Chef Messes Up in Texas

Top Chef: Texas Jeers to Top Chef: Texas for throwing too many cooks into the broth. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! Yeah, yeah, we know, everything's bigger in Texas, but the new season of Bravo's Emmy-winning reality show bit off more than it could chew by starting off with 29 competitors instead of the usual 16. Not only was the process confusing - the second hour of the two-part season opener began with 11 chefs having made the first cut, 10 yet to cook and four more "on the bubble" - but it made it tough to get a taste of most of the contenders. And some of the most promising chef-testants - like Chaz Brown, with his charming middle-school crush on host Padma Lakshmi - were cleaved just as we were getting attached to them. Now that Top Chef: Texas has nearly sliced the field in half, one can only hope the season improves as it boils down the sweet 16 to a lone culinary star. 'Snow White And The Huntsman' Poster: Kristen Stewart Gets Medieval!

Based on this new art for "Snow White and the Huntsman," it looks like this flick might really be the fairest of them all. The Kristen Stewart-led flick shows off its fantasy colors in a new banner teasing the upcoming trailer, which is hitting the web tomorrow. Sure, it's photoshopped to all hell, but the banner shows off a very "Lord of the Rings"-esque visual style, just like director Rupert Sanders promised. So what if we can only see half of all the actors' faces? Like Sanders could just give everything away all at once. But there are plenty of nods to what fans can expect in this expansive banner for "Snow White and the Huntsman." That sword in Stewart's hand is proving that her Snow White is no Bella Swan, for sure. "Snow White and the Huntsman" is a twist on the classic tale of Snow White. Charlize Theron plays an evil queen who banishes Stewart's Snow White so she can be the fairest of them all. The queen calls upon a Huntsman, played by Chris Hemsworth, to take Snow White into the woods and kill her, but he ends up deciding to train her to fight so she can go back and defeat the queen. This banner stays true to the promo images of the cast released at Comic-Con. In fact, the portrayal of the three main characters hasn't changed much at all. Stewart might look a little more docile out of her suit of armor, but Hemsworth still can't let go of his axe and Theron has the straightest back we've ever seen thanks to that intense outfit she has going on. Hopefully the costume design looks as badass in motion as it does in the images that have been released. But don't get too excited just yet. "Snow White and the Huntsman" won't hit theaters until June 1, 2012, and there is still plenty more promotional material to get hyped up over. Check out Hollywood Crush's interview with "Snow White and the Huntsman" costume designer Colleen Atwood! What did you think of the banner for "Snow White and the Huntsman"? Yes, and also the lawyer for rapper Pitbull is mentioning just how absurd that's.our editor recommendsLindsay Lohan to Pose Nude for Playboy for $a million (Report)Pitbull Responds to Lindsay Lohan Suit Invites Actress to MTV Video Music Honours (Video)Lindsay Lohan Suing Pitbull Over Song Lyric Lohan is presently suing Putbull for rapping about her. The lyric that trigger a suit went such as this: "Hustlers move aside, and so i'm tiptoein', to help keep flowin' / I first got it secured like Lindsay Lohan." Many people have noted the absurdity that Lohan would test the very first Amendment by declaring Pitbull's words triggered her "tremendous emotional distress" and were "determined to do permanent harm" to her image as "an expert actor of excellent repute." The silver prize in silliness needs to be that Lohan filed the suit in Nassau County, NY, declaring to become a resident there in her own mother's home. In order to obtain the situation moved from county court to some federal one, Pitbull's lawyers have filed a notice of removal that discusses how Lohan designed a sworn declaration that "wrongly attested" to her residence. As proof, it's stated that Lohan includes a California driver's license, rents a house in Venice Beach, which "given her frequent legal troubles, Ms. Lohan offers irrevocable ties to California that will probably keep her there for that expected future." Dwts Episode Recap: Tuesday, March. 25, 2011

Dwts cuts the region lower to six couples while you more pair goes home. Did Chaz's number finally appear? Did Maks' blowup go back to bite him and Hope inside the butt? Or did someone else possess a hike? Uncover below! For your record, In my opinion Hope and Maks are fine. Regardless if you are Team Maks or Team Len, his episode would only spur his number of fans to mobilize. They'll probably land inside the faux bottom two as punishment though. Len can't make mention (yet) of taking part in World War III with Maks and rather selects J.R. and Karina for your encore.First safe couple:J.R. and KarinaAfter a performance by Kristin Chenoweth (how appealing was that single?), the next two top scorers, Ricki and Derek, and Nancy and Tristan, hit happens. But that's not just before the requisite footage of each and every star, once you have raves, apologizing last evening to get been difficult in testing. You understand, males, it is advisable to apologize to become surly, good scores or else. "You aren't Hitler. You aren't the next Reich," Nancy told Tristan. "You aren't Mussolini." "She didn't say he wasn't Stalin," Tom quips.Next two safe couples:Ricki and DerekNancy and TristanBecause we never can must many Broadway tributes, the Macy's Stars of Dance pay tribute to NY's theater district getting a medley choreographed by Kenny Ortega and including Corbin Bleu (he starred in Inside the Levels). Am I the only real individual who misses the 'fro? And who considers The Attractive Existence after they hear his title? Yes? Thought so. Martina McBride follows if there's one title that screams "Broadway," it's - oh, wait. It's mix-promotion time. She'll be round the CMA Honours inside a couple of days. Now the particular drama begins! Footage comes of Chaz ventilation in regards to the idol idol judges inside the confessional last evening (guess everyone knows whose side he's on!) after their routine."If you are a overweight lady slimming lower, they accept you,In . he fumed. "If you are a overweight guy... they penalize you together with [compare] you to definitely certainly penguins ... like I'm someone body fat troll dancing using this beautiful lady every week.In . OK, nobody likes or deservesto be compared to animals, I'll supply him with that (and Bruno is geting progressively more absurd from it), however you're a bad dancer and you'll know. In the event you could move like Kirstie did, you would then be seeing greater scores. Nevertheless the idol idol judges will also be generous along with your scores after they could (and may) are actually harsher and then try to gave a b - for effort. Len gives Bruno a "tsk, tsk" finger wave, but he just unapologetically brushes it well, as being a "who me?" Don't play dumb now, dude.Next safe couples:David and KymChaz and Lacey will be in risk.Carrying out a pre-Halloween dance with kids, the years have finally come! Maks talks! He notifies Brooke the idol idol judges are entitled for his or her opinions and they're the experts. "The primary one factor I really wish to apologize for is - I'd this idea throughout my thoughts plus it [showed up in this area wrong] - it is not my show. I'm a a part of a very large cast and crew." Just what was this "idea"? He wishes it absolutely was his show? He gained the show how it is? "Damn. I'd request him for just about any raise," Tom jokes. It was not all smiles and laughs last evening - the three judges' mouths dropped when Maks made that comment, and many types of three concurred that Hope's dance "wasn't much betterInch than Chaz's. "I'm frustrated with getting her judged on meticulous work while someone else continues to be judged on effort," Maks reiterated inside the confessional. "I am beginning behind several of these people. ... I don't give a sh--," Hope mentioned. So possibly we have to election you off then? Also, there's not really a ringer in this group, Hope, and so the former comment doesn't hold.Next safe couple:Make the most of and CherylHope and Maks join Chaz and Lacey in risk, but aren't always the bottom two.As well as the couple going home is... Chaz and Lacey."I needed so much from this. It was a amazing journey that really pressed me and shown me I really could perform a much more than I believed I really could,In . according to him.Ben asks if he's any regrets, and Chaz immediately states no. "I desired showing America another kind of guy. If there's somebody at all like me on tv once i was maturing, my whole existence could have been different," according to him, trading his appearance to fighting LGBT youths. That certain will be a extended-time coming, which is unfortunate better ballroom ballroom dancers left before Chaz, however don't begrudge him his run. It comes down lower to being America's favorite dancer, not the most effective, which Kristin and Chynna apparently only recognized publish-boot. Plus, had Chaz not continued to be this extended, we might possibly not have seen Cher in many her glory. Silver lining, people.Whoever else think? Did the very best person return home? Or perhaps you have want Hope and Maks to select his episode? Will Bruno get a Christmas card from Chaz? Will Bruno stop along with his animal critiques? Will Maks as well as the idol idol judges hug creating? Does Tom deserve a rise? (The best fact is yes, duh.) show less

But also for Mike Delfino (James Denton) on Desperate Regular folks, learning that Susan had aided Carlos hide killing Gaby's stepfather was, oddly, a massive sigh of relief. "It absolutely was very good news for him. See who made our report on best TV couples Yes, try as she might, the always subtle Susan (that are we kidding?) ended up spilling the beans to Mike within the finish of last week's episode. Although his previous existence in jail (for wrongful dying and dealing drugs) means the stakes are high when the murder - and also the understanding from this -- be uncovered, Mike's time round the wrong side in the law might help his wife fight her own demons. "He feels as if they understand how to approach it. So you will notice some drama, to date as how Susan thinks they need to handle it, and Mike thinks they need to handle it because he's already been through it before," Denton states. "Then its only dependent on how they handle the stress from this, and him helping her deal with getting this baggage. Susan's inclination is always to discuss it a good deal - which is the worst factor she could do - to be able to not deal with it whatsoever, so he must help her." After Susan (Teri Hatcher) began prone to great measures to appease her nagging guilt by trying to find punitive measures - i.e. handcuffing herself for negelecting to pay for soda and ripping up a picture from the police officer's newborn - Susan needs all the help she'll get. "That's among their reasons for conflict, happens when she will need a minimal profile and basically not act deeply in love with it and not draw plenty of concentrate on it," according to him. Carlos and Mike are actually pals for just about any very very long time to ensure that they are afflicted by this," Denton states. "Ricardo's a great actor, and there exists a really close relationship it is therefore fun for people to access interact and do this kind of stuff. In my opinion everyone else will appreciate that males have to work these products out. We didn't just ignore there is a large history." On-screen, Mike's new understanding can result in some difficulties with Susan with Carlos, but off-screen, Denton is reveling within the chance to revisit his character's bad boy side that was outdated way back when meant for his role as doting husband and father. "It's fun to assist help remind individuals who this individual, sooner or later, will be a really mysterious, interesting character that you just could less than put your finger on. Indie distribs get creative

Relativity thinks 'Immortals' has potential to become franchise.FilmDistrict is relying on buzz to enhance 'Drive' B.O.NEW You are able to -- After several lean many years of recession-fueled cuts and niche arm closings, indie distribs are in greater amounts -- with wider releases -- than ever before. From FilmDistrict to Relativity Media, new distribs are fighting the galleries by themselves turf with genre photos targeted at mass audiences. Niche film children like Kerbside Points of interest are raking in surprising box office from overlooked audiences. As the rebound is nice news, competition for any diminishing quantity of theatrical tickets offered and new mediums competing for the similar domestic audience result in a crucial question: Just how can indies with limited assets use marketing to interrupt with the growing clutter they are assisting to create?FilmDistrict theatrical distribution prexy Bob Berney, Kerbside Points of interest co-prexy Howard Cohen and Relativity Media theatrical marketing prexy Terry Curtin think about this problem around the "Indies Create a Comeback" panel March. 4 at Variety's two-day Film Marketing Summit at Universal City's Hilton La.The 3 executives possess a combined 75 years in the commercial, however with new media apparently changing every day, experience alone is not enough to navigate a frightening new landscape. The "300"-style epic "Immortals" is really a potential franchise for Ryan Kavanaugh's nascent wide-release distrib Relativity. It is also the very first test for recent hire Curtin, a longtime marketing and PR maven at Revolution, Fox, Disney and Universal.Curtin approaches film campaigns a little just like a lab researcher performing experiments with new technology."Our 'Immortals' cope with MTV and ESPN is a component of the huge initiative. TV continues to be the best way to get at a crowd, but they are having to pay less attention," Curtin states. She cites a 2010 Nielsen/Yahoo! study that states 75% of TV audiences are media multitasking as you're watching TV, several that develops even greater within the valued 18-34 male demographic. She aims to lure audiences to do something following a TV place using mobile device or computer with exclusive contests along with other incentives "that feel urgent enough to allow them to get it done, to have an broadened experience," she states. "Whenever you drive MTV audiences onto MTV.com, you are burrowing deep into (MTV's) consumer loyalty and speaking for their social networking base." Curtain stresses the significance of what she calls "possessing that second device when you are watching tv. No bit of advertising must land alone -- it is a opportunity for us to create a crowd online. Within the MTV and ESPN deal, I am (using) a number of that precious property to direct the crowd to that particular second screen."It might seem a lot more like social engineering than social media, but at its core, Curtin just really wants to produce the type of "network" of close ties the majors as well as their corporate brothers and sisters ignore.InchWe are inside a really competitive landscape with less assets (compared to majors), and (do not have) a movie with existing stars or (one that is) according to a current property," she describes. A few of her close ties cut across multiple films, together with a Obvious Funnel deal marketing Relativity fare via on-air talent, concerts along with other occasions, along with a Virgin Created deal which brings the business's promotions into GameStop and finest Buy stores. (Virgin can also be co-creating what might be the greatest top quality entertainment feature up to now -- next April's all-star comedy shorts compilation, the untitled Peter Farrelly/Charles Wessler laffer.)Joining up on choose projects with The new sony, FilmDistrict's wide-release mandate makes this startup the greatest challenge Picturehouse and Newmarket vet Berney has ever faced."Studio releases may require a $20 million opening weekend to outlive according to their budget," Berney states. "It is extremely different to have an independent distributor, though P&A and marketing expenses are comparable.Inch While person to person has fueled lengthy theatrical runs for Berney's films, his first weekend grosses haven't been more crucial."It is a crowded marketplace now, which does set the bar pretty high for that marketing money it requires to perform a wide release that's competitive, (especially it's) oftentimes this is an purchase of a lesser-budget film." FilmDistrict could not have become on a much better start after nabbing its first release, the PG-13 horror film "Insidious," in Toronto this past year. Opening to $13.two million in April, the $a million film made $54 million plus hefty ancillary, a lot more than justifying the $20 million marketing budget.Film District's latest, 'Drive," has had in certain $23 million in 2 days, but Berney is relying on the film's person to person possibility to change it right into a greater gear. "The folks that actually enjoy it become almost superfans -- they tell everybody. Those who feel it's too strange, strange or violent often go onto the following movie and do not discuss it much." The important thing to some effective campaign for Berney and wife and marketing partner Jeanne Berney has not transformed since their IFC days. "From more compact to bigger films, the actual technique is to utilize the filmmakers around the marketing -- to actually know very well what these were attempting to do and enable them to achieve the crowd they intended," he states.Meanwhile, Kerbside Points of interest co-prexy Cohen made it the indies' economic slump simply by selling a stake of his outfit (co-run by Eric d'Arbeloff) to Lionsgate in 2007. Apart from conventional purchases, he obtained his greatest success up to now having a business design which had labored well for Berney: the service deal. The American Film Co. hired Kerbside to distribute helmer Robert Redford's Lincoln subsequently murder drama "The Conspirator," setting up all of the release costs and having to pay the distrib a fee. (Lionsgate became a member of in around the deal, mainly to assist boost foreign sales). The film opened in Toronto this past year to mixed reviews and couple of large bidders.Just like their hit 2010 Sundance pickup "Winter's Bone," Kerbside discovered they might get a few of their greatest grosses in middle America, which niche distribs either ignore or treat being an afterthought. Rookie bow scores big

'Deep Blue Sea''The Marziano''I Wish''The Reasons of the Heart'Jose Luis Rebordinos nabbed Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Clive Owen starrer 'Intruders' for his first edition as San Sebastian festival directorLast September -- three months after Jose Luis Rebordinos was named San Sebastian Festival director -- Spain's press wrung its hands over the fest's future."Bigger black storm clouds" were rumbling into view, newspaper El Pais augured."Huge challenges -- economic, cinematographic -- await Rebordinos. He faces a titanic task, multiplying loaves and fish," it thundered.Rebordinos started his job in January, and nine months in, no disaster has struck the Basque festival -- quite the contrary as observers note a sense of energy and direction to the Spanish meet.Indeed, global upheaval and Latin America's economic emergence may play into San Sebastian's hands.Rebordinos first tackled San Sebastian's budget, noting that 2010's annual 6.7 million ($9.6 million) was "little for a festival aiming for important industry and international press presence." He managed to get fest partner Guipuzcoa County to raise its investment by $208,800 to $1.4 million. Fest's other partners -- Sebastian Town Hall, the Basque regional government, Spain's Ministry of Culture -- all maintained $1.4 million annual funding.By netting new sponsors, such as insurance company Mapfre Foundation (co-organizer of a frosh kids' film workshop), Rebordinos upped the fest's 2011 budget to $10.1 million: a small miracle indeed. With the budget under control, critics claim that 2011's competition is a 2010 redux.Certainly a bevy of fest regulars return: Terence Davies, a 2008 retrospective recipient, with "The Deep Blue Sea"; past double Golden Shell winner Arturo Ripstein with "The Reasons of the Heart"; Ana Katz's dysfunctional family comedy "The Marziano"; and Hirokazu Kore-eda, his fourth competition berth, with sibling drama "I Wish."Hallmark sections remain: Kutxa-New Directors' competition, dangling a 90,000 cash prize; Films in Progress, a showcase for unfinished films; a retro of Jacques Demy; and the career achievement Donostia Award, this year given to Glenn Close. But Rebordinos never claimed that he's rebuilding San Sebastian from the bottom up."I've been on the festival's management committee since 1995: this year's changes are a logical evolution," not a total break, he argues. He stepped into Mikel Olaciregui's shoes, he adds, partly to preserve San Sebastian's distinctive Spanish and Latin American pic bent. That said, under Rebordinos San Sebastian is evolving fast: Venice used to nab Spain's biggest fall movies. This year, Spain's biggest film, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo's Clive Owen starrer "Intruders," opens San Sebastian, post-Toronto. Marking its strongest Spanish lineup in years, the 2011 fest boasts 17 world preems of local pics: in competition is Benito Zambrano's post-Civil War women's drama "The Sleeping Voice," Enrique Urbizu's crime thriller "No Rest for the Wicked" and Isaki Lacuesta's "The Double Steps." Spanish films in the fest span more sections than ever, from intimate drama (David Trueba's chamber piece "Madrid 1987"), radical cinema ("The Double Steps"), animation (Ignacio Ferreras' senior citizen buddy comedy "Wrinkles") and broad comedy (Telmo Esnal's mother-in-law-from-hell tale "Urteberri on, amona!"). Sidebars bowing this year: a Culinary Zinema showcase and Midnight Screenings. Led by Martin Scorsese's George Harrison doc, special screenings are up from four titles last year to 12, the basis, perhaps, says Rebordinos, for a standalone section in 2012. There are more genre offerings: "Intruders," "No Rest"; Eduardo Chapero-Jackson's fantasy thriller "Verbo"; Nacho Vigalondo's "Extraterrestial," unfolding during a UFO attack; and Oren Moverman's "Rampart," about shady L.A. police dealings. San Sebastian has two longer-term obsessions, Rebordinos says: "Building international press presence (and) becoming a Latin America-European industry meeting point."This year, San Sebastian hosts a Mexico-Basque producers' meet. Rebordinos is talking to Latin American film institutes about staging a Europe-Latin America co-production forum in 2012. A best case example, he says, though it's a market rather than a co-production meeting, is Ventana Sur, organized by Argentina's Incaa Film Institute and Cannes' Market. The timing is excellent: Two years ago, Latin American producers looked to Europe for finance; now European producers are beginning to look to Latin America.A larger industry presence attracts more world premieres and more press. But a forum entails a larger budget. "I'll be working on it starting in October," Rebordinos says.HIGHLIGHTSPremieresSan Sebastian has locked up 36 world premieres this year, including 21 from Spain, six from Latin America and three from Asia.World preems with major pre-fest buzz include Kim Ki-duk's Europe-lensed "Amen"; paraplegic-themed closing night pic "Untouchable," from Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache and acquired by the Weinstein Co. in July; Sebastian Cordero's Ecuadorian road movie "Pescador"; Julie Delpy's space station pic "Le Skylab"; and Filippos Tsitos' Greek crime drama "Unfair World."International premieres include Martin Scorsese's documentary "George Harrison: Living in a Material World"; "The Three Musketeers" by Paul W.S. Anderson (Europe's biggest-budgeted film of the year); Sarah Polley's family drama "Take This Waltz"; and Simon Arthur's pscyhological thriller "Silver Tongues."Star PowerStars expected to grace the red carpet include 2011 Donostia award recipient, Glenn Close; jury prez, Frances McDormand; Clive Owen and Daniel Bruhl ("Intruders"); Antonio Banderas (20-minute sneak preview of "Puss in Boots"); Matthew Macfayden and Logan Lerman ("The Three Musketeers"); Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy ("Untouchable"); Walter Hill; James Gray (takes part in a retro dubbed American Film Noir 1990-2010); Amy Canaan Mann ("Texas Killing Fields"); Agnes Varda; Rosalie Varda; and Mathieu Demy ("Jacques Demy").Main Industry EventsSept. 15-16: 3rd Audiovisual Digital ForumSept. 19: European Film Promotion's Latin America meetingIle de France-Madrid Film Commission co-production lunch and Spain Film Commission meetingSept. 19-21: EFP's European Distributors: Up NextSept. 20-21: Films in Progress WORLD REPORT: SPAINPlay for the match | TV tacks in new direction Fest Traveler: San SebastianRookie bow scores big | Genre fare reborn under Rebordinos | How to Shoot in SpainFair-weather filmmaking | Studio strives for parity with Euro rivals | Key players Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Puncture Trailer Online

Chris Evans needles the lawHe's been striding across the screen recently in Captain America, but Chris Evans clearly doesn't just want to be seen as a clean-cut, square-jawed hero. He's also keen to show he's got the chops to carry something a little tougher, such as the legal drama Puncture, which has just shoved its first trailer out into the world. You can take a look below. Puncture finds Evans as Mike Weiss, a young but brilliant and slightly oddball lawyer (check out his togs in the first scene) whose tiny firm catches what could be the most lucrative case of its brief life - a nurse (Vinessa Shaw) who was infected with AIDS after getting stuck with a needle. As part of their work, they discover that there's an invention ready to test called Safety Point that would put an end to such accidents. But that's when things start to get a little murkier: a big corporation with some powerful political connections is monopolising the new gadget and the fight to get access to it might just destroy Mike, best pal/partner Paul (Mark Kassen) and everyone around them. Oh, and there's the small matter of Mike's drug habit to contend with...Kassen also co-directed the film with brother Adam, and while this is clearly meant to show a different side of Evans, it's worth noting that Puncture has been finished for more than a year and is only now seeing the light of day in the US after he's hit it big with the Cap. Puncture is set to arrive on September 23 across the pond, but there's no finalised UK release yet.

Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, and Sensible Clothes Featured in New Breaking Dawn Key Art

We can all agree that the posters and images released so far for Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 have been a little subdued, with far less angst on display here than in previous installments and more of a focus on Bella and Edward’s domestic skinny-dipping, chess-playing, honeymooning bliss. Fine enough. While you wait with bated breath to see what Summit unveils as their actual official poster, take a gander at newly surfaced key art that sees nine familiar characters in their new Breaking Dawn garb. Summit tells Movieline that this artwork is connected to a similar banner unveiled at last month’s Comic-Con, but it’s not quite the official poster for the November 18 release. So consider it a tasty preview of how your favorite Cullens (and Jacob Black) have matured in their lives and sensible wardrobe choices by the time we catch up with them in Breaking Dawn - Pt. 1. The Secret Circle: No Crossovers With The Vampire Diaries

Secret Circle If you're hoping for a crossover between The Secret Circle and The Vampire Diaries, the CW's two supernatural series based on the L.J. Smith novels, you shouldn't hold your breath. "I don't know if you'll see that crossover episode," Kevin Williamson, who is the executive producer of both shows, said with finality at CW's fall TV previews Thursday. "I didn't want this show to look like The Vampire Diaries. You want this show to look like its own show. You want it to be its own world." Comic-Con: Will The Secret Circle series stay true to the novels? Williamson stressed that despite sharing some basic supernatural DNA, the two universes and their separate mythologies don't connect. "We would be tied to the werewolf and vampire lore and witchdom. That limits us. We need to start from ground zero and create our own story... so that we can tell just as good a story as Vampire Diaries." Even though murder and villainy are nearly the norm on Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle will be a sinister story in other ways. "Our version of witchcraft is very dark," Williamson said. "It's certainly not that hard-edge, ripping hearts out and slicing people open the way we do in Vampire, but there's other ways to skin a cat." Exclusive: The Secret Circle taps Logan Browning Part of the series' darkness is connected to its adult themes. The show stars Britt Robertson as a suddenly orphaned girl who returns to her mother's hometown only to discover she is part of a secret coven of witches. The story will delve into the different generations of witches, whose motives aren't quite as innocent as the younger circle. "What I love about this show is the multigenerational," Williamson said. "I love the idea that it's not just a teen show, it's very much an adult show. The themes and ideas that are running through it, while they're young characters, it's going to get very adult very fast." Exclusive: Check out the new trailer for CW's The Secret Circle Even so, there is also a certain innocence to the characters' experiences. "Because of the age of these characters - they're not 140 years old [like on Vampire Diaries] - they're experiencing these things for the first time - first love, first betrayal, these friendships that will hopefully last forever," executive producer Andrew Miller said. "We're just trying to use the witchcraft as a backdrop to explore ... issues these kids are going through as they transition into adulthood and define themselves." The Secret Circle premieres Thursday, Sept. 15 at 9/8c on the CW.

Diane Haithman is adding to Deadline's TCA coverage. At the modern TCA panel for Person of great interest, a brand new CBS crime thriller series in the creating team of J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk, Jonathan Nolan, David Semel and Greg Semel, star Taraji P. Henson stated she required the role within the series since you cant fail with J. J. Abrams. However it appears that you could -- 2010s one-season failure Undercovers for NBC as being a just to illustrate. Co-executive producer Nolan clarified an issue about this by doing this:One thing I really like about J.J. is the fact that hes not precious. He produces material, he loves to work, he loves to put kick-ass Television shows available. The character from the TV format is, its a large risk, it is not just like a movie its type of a 1-shot gig. TV, as Im finding, is really a marathon. Personally, I believe J.J.s record in TV and films is unparalleled. But which was stated in the finish from the session. Before that, the panel -- via satellite from New You are able to as well as including stars Michael Emerson (veteran of Abrams hit Lost) and Jim Caviezel (Jesus in Mel Gibsons The Passion from the Christ) -- with each other talked about how exactly excited they may be connected to the latest Abrams effort.Nolan joked he had such confidence within the show, about attempting to track a mysterious figure before he commits a criminal offense, he was willing allow it a title that experts could easily get their way with -- as with Person of Disinterest or Show of No Interest. An individual of great interest, he stated, often means a suspect, victim or witness. Lots of what our show is all about is uncertainty, he stated. The show handles surveillance and secrets, and panel people joked that Abrams had placed a tool within their microphones that will make sure they are go dead each time a plot twist or secret concerning the show ended up being to be revealed (indeed, there have been some quiet breaks when questions got too pointed). Nolan, making his foray into TV, stated the brand new show is making use of exactly the same brooding darkness he introduced towards the Dark Dark night Batman installment.I really like crime procedurals, I really like cop shows, [but] I had been thinking about writing something a bit more harmful, he stated. Ive been attracted to that particular facet of Batman maybe we're making use of a number of that. Emerson stated he wished his role within this show as software expert Finch will permit him to grow beyond the kind of character he described in Lost successful he never expected. My part on Lost only agreed to be another guest place so far as I understood. Every character actor's secret dream is the fact that theyll hit it from the ball park and theyll be requested to remain that type of happened on Lost -- I had been never permitted to visit home in the Hawaiian island, he stated. He added that within the new role he hopes to complete a strange turn once in some time: I wish it to possess a limp or perhaps an accent. Caviezel stated he required the role because his character, looking for the mystery figure, is hunting for a purpose I believe, enjoy it struck me, its likely to hit others theres something besides all of the technology within the story.Being an aside, Caviezel addressed the expertise of being a member of Gibsons hotly questionable Christ movie. It had been a bit more questionable than I figured it might be, he accepted, joking. "For some time there, I figured we may have been accepted the Beatles. It had been one thing which i did and that i just stored moving forward. When requested particularly about his relationship with Gibson, he stated: He certainly directed it, however i look when Im likely to do anything whatsoever in the material. Im a fundamental, simple, small-town guy."
